Programmed to be Fat

Today’s NFN is a shout out to the ladies. Specifically any who plan to get prego one day! Ever heard the saying “a chip off the old block”? Well, new research in the Journal of Neuroscience recently attributed new meaning to this well-known adage.

In a fascinating study, researchers discovered that fetus ‘in utero’ exposed to a high-fat diet are born with more fat-sensitive neurons which increase the appetite for fat as the child grows up. According to the researchers, these findings “link high levels of fats circulating in the mother’s blood during pregnancy to the overeating and increased exercise/>lose-weight-exercise/>weight gain of offspring after weaning.” GASP. So if you must have your cake and eat it too, at least do it before you decide to be fruitful and multiply. It’s not fair to make your kidlets pay the price for your poor nutrition decisions.

Looks like one way to address childhood obsity is by going straight to the “old block.”
