Avocado Nutrition

If there ever was a food who had an unjustly bad reputation, it’s the poor avocado. Higher than any other fruit, the fat of a whole avocado totals around 29g (reminder, hardly anyone will eat an entire avocado in one sitting, so you aren’t getting all that fat at once). Plus, a little fat never hurt anyone. In fact, it actually helps!

Your body NEEDS fat. Yep. That’s right. You need to eat fat in order for your body to absorb fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin E Sliced Avocadosand other nutrients. And the sweet old avocado, while high in total fat, is high in the fat that your body wants and needs. It is extremely low in cholesterol and sodium and is packed with a whopping 13 grams of dietary fiber! It is a great source of Vitamin K, Vitamin C, and Folate, and well… my goodness, it is pretty darn hard to get so many nutrients packed into one food that needs NO work at all to taste good. Plus it helps keep you skin soft and your hair shiny. It’s a flat out superfood here to save the diet. Like superman, with no cape.

And a helpful hint… since most of us can not eat a whole avocado in one sitting, keep the pit in the half that you do not eat to keep the rest of the avocado from turning brown!

In case you needed one more reason to love guacamole.

    I can eat a whole avocado… :-(
I cut it in dice, add to a huge bowl of green leafs, the dressing includes a spoon of honey, two spoons of balsamico, a spoon of sesame or puppkinseed oil and a spoon of olive oil. And I eat the whole alone

    but I liked your post

I can definitely eat the whole avocado. When I make dinner for the family, I put half in the salad and eat the other half right out of the shell (shhhh);-)

They’re like crack, only good for you. I haven’t found a bad way to eat avocado yet. My favorite though, is to use it instead of mayo, butter, or other spreads. add some tomato, basil, and flax oil on top of all of it on a couple pieces of hemp bread toasted, and you’ve got yerself a lunch to beat all lunches! And yep, I’m finishing the other half of my beauty after I hit submit…

Hello, all I LUV avocado also and yes I can eat a whole one :D On the down side I suffer from terrible migraines and also IC and unfortunately avocado can be bad for both. I haven’t notices a flare up with my IC when I eat them but I had one a couple nights ago and woke up at 6am with a raging migraine (may be a co-winky-dink) because I think they may be more hormone related but I was wondering if anybody knew how long an avocado stays in your system/blood stream? I really don’t want to give them up as they are wonderful for your skin and great for my hair. Any way if anybody can answer the questions that would be great. Thanks and Viva La Avocado ;P

  15. Traci Says:

Guilty as charged! I love avocados and eat the whole thing in one sitting..usually as a meal. I douse it with lemon juice, add a little salt and pepper and wahla! DELICIOSO!!

  16. Rita Says:

Avacado’s increase your testosterone levels, which in turn decreases your estrogen levels. In some women this may improve mood swings, etc; however, if you already have low estrogen levels, you may want to stay shy of avacado’s. I actually feel much better after eating an avacado, and I love the taste! By the way, I obtained this info from an article in a medical magazine which I no longer have, I’m sorry to say; However, I’m sure you could verify it by researching on-line.

  17. Brian Says:

I can eat 2, 3, 4 large avocados at once! My girlfriend makes guacamole and we just sit there and eat a whole big bowl of it in a sitting…. so yummy… a little hint, some cumin in guacamole really helps bring the flavor out.

I often just cut open a avocado in half, put a little pepper and soy sauce on it and go to town… yummy!

  18. CT Says:

I can eat a whole avocado w/out a problem. I usually have it together with diced banana and diced ripe mango for lunch. True, it’s a bit pricey but the savings you get from its nutritional value far outweighs the price you pay at the checkout stand :-)

  19. AANNAA Says:

Man, when I read the article I freaked out, thinking I shouldn’t be eating a whole avacado. but the last two days, I ate a whole one at lunch time with a 2 slices of turkey. Did I OD on the protein….what is the protein content of an avacado??

  20. Felicity Laird Says:

I just ate an entire avocado with tomato and island teriyaki sauce with sesame seeds, I call it my asian fusion guacamole. So good! I have a question though, is it bad for you to eat an entire rather large haas avocado in one sitting? Like is it bad to have 29 g of fat in one meal? I feel like it is not that great for you, some one tell me its fine so I can continue this horrible but healthy habit of mine. Thanks and love to all <3 Namaste

  21. Kate Says:

Put it this way … if you go out to eat at a resturaunt (applebees, Ruby Tuesday, TGI Friday’s) you can easily be having over 75 grams of fat in one sitting, so no .. the 29 grams of fat in an avocado is not terrible at all and it’s all healthy fat, unlike the 75 gram fat burger at Fridays! Hope that helps :)

  22. dan in chitown Says:

I love a whole avocado cut up with just lime juice, sea salt and freshly ground peppercorns. Hint: get the peppercorn melange or mix. Very intense flavor. Great for when you’re feeling sick or blah.

  23. jenny Says:

i love avocado! i usually eat them sweet. i make avocado smoothie with soy milk and a little bit of sugar. you can also freeze it and eat it like ice cream. i just made some tonite.

  24. Wanda Says:

I just made a smoothie with almost the whole avocado, about a cup of plain soy milk and a little bit of frozen raspberries or no raspberries and just a little sugar, your choice. Its so good for you and when you drink it, you feel good too.

  25. charisse Says:

well, I eat a whole avocado also. fortunately here in the Philippines they are sold very cheaply.. but its still a good bargain though if you get it in a high price because you benefit from good nutrition in return.:).. ohh,, try it as fruit shake,, totally the best..

  26. sandi Says:

Ha !! I was feeling guilty while reading because I definately eat the whole avocado in one sitting. See I’m not alone !!

  27. Gerri Says:

Oh, these gems are so delicious and good for your whole being. I feel so indulgent when I eat a whole one for lunch or like this morning, I had one for breakfast. Yummy!

  28. D8 Says:

FYI… Avocados, like all plant derived foods, do not contain ANY cholesterol.
On another note, I make avocado smoothies with half an avocado, 8-10 oz of milk and honey, and it serves as a whole meal. it’s delicious!

  29. Heather Says:

I love these sweet gems as well. They are pricey but the health benefits seem to outweigh the price. I’ve been suffering from joint pain and headaches lately and today I’ve avoided the processed stuff and white flour I’ve been eating and replaced them with yummy apples, hard boiled eggs, sweet orange pepper dipped in delicious fresh guacamole! So fabulous and wow no headache and minimal joint pain. Such a nice change.

By the way, Greg’s statement “They’re like crack, only good for you”, sums up my obsession. I’ve had five avocados in the house since Saturday and I can’t stop thinking about eating them.

  30. pjnoir Says:

Are we talking about Hass avocados? I can’t believe that eating a whole avo seems difficult. Fear the carb not the Fat, Fat in a diet does NOT make you fat- Carbs do and they do it very well. Cholesterol is made in the human body because it is an essential micro-nutrient for survival. There has never ever been a study that links cholesterol with heart disease, Pharmaceutical companies try to sell this point but it is not true so don’t fear the avocado. Fear the French fry, bread, cake, fruit juices. Diabetes is in your future.
