In a perfect world, chocolate cake would be nutritious, soda would build bones like milk, and food would have negative calories. Sadly, our world is far from perfect, chocolate cake is far from nutritious, soda destroys your bones, BUT, some foods DO have negative calories. Well, one in three ain’t bad.
You’ve heard it said that celery is a dieter’s best friend, but why? Celery is one of those foods that had very few calories. In fact, one stalk has a mere 6 calories. So you can munch away until your jaw aches, and you’ll still have only consumed less than 50 calories. In fact, because your body actually burns calories to digest food, (finally you don’t have to work for something!) it ends up burning more than 6 calories to digest that stalk of celery. This is why celery is called a “negative calorie food,” because the digestion process results in more calories burned than consumed from the food.
So, let’s talk about the nutritional package you get in these crunchy stalks. While they arent the most nutritionally dense veggie you can eat, celery certainly has some stellar qualities to offer.
1)It’s got plenty of fiber. It’s a veg. No shocker there. (about 2grams of fiber in 27 sticks.)
2) It’s a great source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and folate too.
3) It contains compounds called pthalides that can possibly help reduce blood pressure.
And if you really want a good reason to buy into celery… just think… ANTS ON A LOG.

I hate to be picky but…2 grams of fiber in 27 sticks of celery is no nutritional bargain. In fact it is a weak boasting point…

lets not be too picky, celery is a super green’s to replace the bad table salt, (sodium). I add two stalks of celery to my smoothies everyday to balance the two bananas I have as well.

I think celery is one of the greatest foods. I like to bake and boil my meats with celery especially turkey and chicken; I like celery in my soups, in veggie salads, and in my tuna and chicken salads or just celery by itself. I has such a refreshing taste. I keep celery in my refrigerator. Carmen

Yeah, but I heard that the reason you burn calories to digest it, is because it has cellulose, which is very hard to digest. Is there any truth to that?
