I love America. I love capitalism and freedom and modern medicine and higher education and all the wonders of the Western world. Minus one thing. Our pathetic “western” diet. High in artery clogging saturated fat, it isn’t exactly a recipe for long-lived prosperity. What to do? Go fishing.
Omega3 fatty acids found in salmon and other cold water fish is “heart healthy” but what does it do exactly to help our western wretch of a diet? According to an article in an American Hearth Association publication called Arteriolosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Omega 3 fatty acids help inhibit the entry of “bad” cholesterol into arteries and decreases the likelihood that the cholesterol will collect in the vessel walls. Diets rich in these kinds of fish oils can prevent the sticking of fat in the aorta, the main road blood takes to leave the heart. That leaves lots of room for blood to flow to important areas of the body, such as the brain. And a little extra brain power never hurt anyone.
Wise up. Clear up. Eat up.
