Mindfulness

I recently read an article about mindfulness and how it improves so many areas of your life, including your health! If that sounds strange, just think about it for a minute (no pun intended).

Specifically related to nutrition, when we take time to think about and savor foods, such as the unique flavors in a pasta dish, or the aroma of coffee, or the bittersweet melting sensation of dark chocolate, we’re being “mindful” of the eating or drinking experience and we enjoy it far more. Compared to your usual lunch routine- inhaling a quick turkey sandwich and bag of chips from the deli and washing it down with a big soda while speed walking back to the office to keep plowing through all that work you need to get done- it makes sense why mindful eaters are often leaner. Since it usually takes about 20 minutes to feel full, you can consume a ton of food in that time if you aren’t careful. Clearly, you will never always have the time to sit at a table and savor every bite of your meal, but maybe try to put your fork down between each bite and actually taste the food you are eating. You might actually remember what you ate for lunch yesterday!  Note: people who practice mindfulness are less likely to binge eat. Go figure.

Just a thought.
