I always thought it was funny that it is called Wonder bread. I mean, really, maybe when it first came out, the idea of slices was pretty wonderful. But nutritionally speaking, the way it breaks down in your body, you might as well be eating sugar. Carbohydrates are fuel for our brains. We need them huge. But the kind of carbohydrates we eat are as important as eating them in the first place. If breakfast is a muffin from the coffee shop, lunch is a sandwich on white (or non-whole wheat) bread, and dinner is a plate of spaghetti, your arteries are in trouble. Yes, your arteries.
A new study just published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that refined carbohydrates, like white bread, put tremendous stress on arterial walls. How healthy your heart is can be measured partly by the elasticity of your arteries. The less gunk (saturated fat and cholesterol clogging them up) the more elastic they are. But now, researchers have found that refined carbohydrates (or energy dense foods) also contribute to decreased elasticity of your arterial walls. In case you don’t really get the implications of that, the openness of your arteries keeps blood flowing freely. Low elasticity of arteries puts you at significant risk for heart disease and sudden death. We don’t want that.
To keep your arteries at their peak elasticity and performance, eat whole grains like oatmeal, vegetables, fruit, and healthy fat like avocados and olive oil.
Wonder bread does less than wonderful things for your body. Rip off the band-aid and switch to 100% Whole wheat bread.
