Water: Covering a Multitude of Sins

I dont like to be regulated. Not by the government, not by anybody. Looks like that fight has been temporarily lost, but that’s beside the point right now. There is, however, a time and a place for regulation. Time: now. Place: the body.

Water is our body’s ultimate regulating system. Besides being the universal thirst quencher, water is truly a remarkable liquid. Here’s why.

Water enables our body to function at it’s peak. 90% of our body is water. Why so much? Water is the ultimate regulator. It takes a lot of energy for water to heat up or cool down (think of how long it takes to boil pasta water, or for the lake that froze over the winter to get to a swim-able temperature). This means that water is an effective means of regulating our body temperatures. Why did mom make you guzzle liquids when you have a fever? To bring your body temperature down: regulate, regulate, regulate! Water has a neutral pH balance, so when our blood pH gets out of whack (think that massive salt attack of a bacon cheeseburger you ate for dinner last night), the water in our blood balances out the sodium to neutralize our blood and bring it to it’s normal pH. Pretty neat stuff, huh?

Water does plenty more for our bodies besides regulate all our systems and keep our core temperatures stable, but there is another time and place for that.

Drink water and listen to nutritionista.

Another nice thing about water (when you’re sick) is it’s needed to sweat and sweating helps remove toxins and possibly even the virus itself from your body. Yep, pretty neat stuff.
